Ethiopia is considered as the cradle of coffee and famous for the fact that it was in the forest in the Kaffa region where Coffea Arabica grew wild. Today, the country shows a typical “smallholder” structure. This means that a high number of farmers with a usually small production yield and an average land plot of 1 hectare carry together their cherries and bring them to central washing stations. Following this typical structure of the country, the Sidama Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union, founded in 2003, unites 39 Fairtrade organizations with a total of approx. 69.000 members spread throughout the mountains and valleys of the Sidama region in southern Ethiopia. The farmers deliver their coffee to a central collection station at their base group where 60% of the coffee goes under the wet process. The SCFCU provides professional training to all managers and coffee pulping machine operators to develop their skills in processing high quality coffee. Moreover SCFCU provides scholarships to hundreds of the members ́ children and has funded three new school buildings for local primary schools. Base organizations used the Fairtrade Premium to improve the infrastructure in their communities, construct cooperative offices and warehouses, install electricity at processing facilities and fund electricity lines reaching more than 5,000 community members.
